Homelessness and Substance Use Disorder

Thursday, July 16, 2026 - 10:00:00 AM until

This webinar from King's College London will present and discuss findings from a study that has examined the recovery experiences of people experiencing homelessness and substance use in Ireland. Participants were recruited from emergency accommodation, transitional housing and permanent housing with supports.

Across interviews and over time, participants described the transformative impact of acquiring a home, or alternatively a sense of stagnation from feeling trapped in a system of homelessness services. Findings shed light on key service features that support, or hinder service users’ pursuit of recovery. These and other themes will be discussed, along with implications for homelessness policy and practice.

The webinar will be led by:

Dr Branagh O’Shaughnessy, lecturer in psychology at York St John University, with a research interest in empowering community programmes for people experiencing homelessness.
Dr Paula Mayock, Associate Professor at the School of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College Dublin, her research focuses primarily on the lives and experiences of marginalised youth and adult populations, covering areas such as homelessness, drug use and drug problems.
