Rolling out the Decent Homes Standard

This webinar introduces the Non-Decent Index (NDI), a free tool that identifies hotspots of Decent Homes failure in England.

Over the next decade the UK Government has committed to updating and strengthening the Decent Homes Standard, as well as extending it to the Private Rented Sector (PRS). But there is a lack of publicly available data on the location of homes that fail the Decent Homes Standard.

This webinar will introduce the Non-Decent Index (NDI). The NDI is a free tool that identifies hotspots of Decent Homes failure in England, produced at the University of Sheffield. The NDI will provide a strategic tool for local authorities, third-sector organisations, campaigners, and landlords, and help researchers to understand local housing markets.

This is an online event supported by the UK Centre for Collaborative Housing Evidence (CaCHE)

Panel:

  • Dr Michael Marshall, University of Sheffield - Michael is a Research Associate at the University of Sheffield. Michael is the principal researcher on the project that produced the NDI. His research focuses on housing inequalities, systems and policy.
  • Mark Ireland, Leeds City Council - Mark is the Head of Private Sector Housing for Leeds City Council. Mark manages teams responsible for monitoring and improving standards in private sector housing in Leeds.
  • Karen Brown, Northern Housing Consortium - Karen is a Senior Policy Advisor at Northern Housing Consortium. The Northern Housing Consortium is the 'Voice of Housing in the North' working with combined and local authorities, housing associations and ALMOs.

Accessing the data:

We would encourage you to explore the data in advance of joining the online session where you will have the opportunity provide feedback on the NDI during through asking questions and after the webinar in our follow-up form.

You can view a beta version of the NDI here.

The app allows you to generate local authority maps of the:

  • NDI – the percentage of homes failing the Decent Homes Standard across all tenures
  • PRS NDI – the percentage of PRS homes failing the Decent Homes Standard, weightened by the size of the PRS in the area.
