Scottish Frontline Network: Understanding and Tackling Hoarding

Tuesday, February 27, 2024

Are you a frontline worker who support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness? Do you want to better understand how hoarding is linked to mental illness and how you can tackle hoarding through multi-agency responses? Then join this free online training session delivered by Respect my Stuff.

Hoarding and extreme clutter is sometimes linked to people's experience of homelessness, and in some cases can put them at risk of losing their tenancy. Therefore, the Scottish Frontline Network are excited to work with Jack Moore from Respect My Stuff to offer this online training session to frontline workers.

NB: Places are limited so please only sign up if you are expecting to attend - if a group of colleagues are all interested, we recommend sending 1-2 representatives from your team to allow more organisations to benefit.

This condensed virtual course explores all aspects of hoarding and extreme clutter. It will increase your understanding of hoarding as a mental illness or as a result of another mental illness, the reasons why someone hoards and the best ways to support them, including positive language and rapport building.

It will also give you the skills and knowledge to take the lead in inter-agency working in the most serious cases, partnering with fire and rescue and legal options, including environmental health and tenancy law.

Among other things, the course covers:

  • Hoarding types in detail, including links with OCD, research findings and psychological theory
  • Hoarding disorder and hoarding as a result of other mental illness, brain injury or learning disability
  • Treatment options, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Exploring the benefits of multi-agency responses and identifying key partners – e.g. landlords, health services, social services, environmental health, housing, third sector mental health support agencies, fire service
  • Overview of the legal issues including disability and mental health legislation, housing law and environmental health powers

Methods of delivery

This is an interactive training session and it will be delivered on Teams. You will receive more information and a link when you sign up.
