Understanding Tenants Under Occupation and Bedroom Tax: Shelter NHAS Training.

14:45 to 16:15

Also known as the bedroom tax, the under occupancy charge, is a cut in housing benefit or the universal credit housing element if you're of working age, a council or housing association tenant and are classed as having a spare room. This means that many families on the lowest incomes will have to find the money to cover the difference, or move out. To pay this, families often need to cut back on essential spending on food, heating and other household bills. Many will take out debt, and some will be unable to pay this shortfall week in, week out and will risk arrears, eviction and homelessness.

This training webinar hosted by Shelter; Understanding Tenant Under Occupation will cover:

• What the under occupancy rules are and who they affect

• The definition of a bedroom

• Relevant case law

• What the options are for tenants

Closing 16:15 - 16:30

Closing Statements and thanks from London Community Organiser Tyrone Scott
