Training Fund: Supporting conversations around grief at Giroscope

We spoke to Sarah Sanders at Giroscope, a housing charity in Hull, about how the Training Fund helped her build confidence when supporting people experiencing grief.

Giroscope is a housing charity located in west Hull. They work to bring empty homes back into use and support people in housing need. Since the 1980s, they have been part of the Self-Help Housing movement, a UK-wide network of organisations focused on community-led regeneration. As well as providing general needs and supported housing, Giroscope offers volunteering opportunities and work in partnership with the local authority to tackle long-term housing issues.

Need for Training

Sarah told us that her team regularly work with people who are going through some difficult life transitions, often where grief and loss are present.

I requested training around grief awareness as we find many people struggle with this aspect of daily life. I wanted to feel more confident when dealing with someone suffering from grief.

The Training

The training was carried out online and focused on understanding the grieving process and how unresolved grief can affect people. The session gave staff space to explore this sensitive issue in a supportive environment.

The Impact

Sarah explained that the training gave her a better understanding of how grief can affect the people she works with, and the confidence to offer more meaningful support.

The learning has enabled me to be more confident when dealing with people struggling with grief both at work and outside of work. It helped me to understand the process someone goes through when grieving and the consequences of leaving grief unresolved."

The Application Process

Sarah found the application quick and straightforward, and encourages others to apply online.

I would definitely recommend the training fund to anyone. It was a very easy process, and I had a quick response from the team.
