Suicide Prevention Training

Wednesday, October 2, 2024

Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Frontline Network, which is facilitated by Streetlife Trust, recently ran suicide prevention training in collaboration with Lancashire Mind.

Blackpool has the highest rate of deaths linked to alcohol, drug abuse and suicide in England, significantly higher than the UK average, so many frontline workers felt they were regularly supporting individuals with suicidal thoughts. Through their feedback at other events, they identified supporting individuals who are having suicidal throughs as a focus area for learning.

Suicide is one of the most common and preventable deaths, yet many people do not know how to support someone who is at risk of suicide. The suicide prevention course aimed to give learners the knowledge and skills needed to prevent deaths from suicide, in workplaces, their personal lives or community settings.

Key learning from the course, as shared by participants were:

  • " There were so many things however what resonated with me was to listen and not to be so solution focussed."
  • " Reassurance in what I was doing."
  • " I have learnt to self-reflect and to listen, not be so solution focused."
  • " Prevention/ intervention strategies."
  • " How to deal with different stages to prevent suicide."
  • " How to better recognise the signs of suicide in people."

Feeding back on the course, Kim Hughes from Streetlife Trust said: “It was also a great opportunity for partners to collaborate and share knowledge of local services that can support anyone experiencing suicidal feelings, along with their own experiences of supporting those in crisis.”
