Remembering those lost to homelessness in London

Friday, October 18, 2024

At 11am on Thursday, 7th November, St Martin-in-the-Fields church will be holding a special service for those who have died whilst experiencing homelessness in London this past year.

"Coming Home" theme shines light on housing struggles

This year’s theme, “Coming Home,” highlights the ongoing struggles of those seeking safe, affordable housing amidst rising levels of homelessness. The annual Commemoration takes place during Remembrance Week and has now been running for more than 18 years. The service will include special performances from the likes of Gavin Bryars, Choir With No Name and Streetwise Opera.

The names of those who have died will be read out to honour their memory. If you would like to register the name of someone who has died in the capital since the 8th November 2023, you can use this form to do so.

The event is open to all – if you would like to find out more, please visit our What’s on page here.

UK homeless deaths on the rise

Distressing statistics uncovered by the Museum of Homelessness last week have revealed that deaths linked to homelessness are increasing in the UK, with a 12.2% rise this year. That equates to one death every six hours. With temperatures set to drop in the coming weeks, there are fears that this could get even worse.

The Museum of Homelessness also reported:

  • 1,474 people experiencing homelessness lost their lives in the UK last year
  • Homeless deaths on the streets rose by 42% this year
  • Those experiencing homelessness are three times more likely to be murdered
