The Breathing Room - A Space for Practitioners to talk about grief, death and dying

Monday, July 1, 2024

As part of the Dying Homeless Project, the Museum of Homelessness have set up The Breathing Room - a regular online space for people working with those experiencing homelessness and related struggles, to share talk about grief, death and dying.

Many frontline staff are deeply affected by the loss of people they support. Sadly, there are precious few opportunities for practitioners to talk about the deaths of people they support, or the fears they hold about working with people at risk of dying prematurely and preventably.

  • The space will take place every two months, on the second Tuesday of the month between 3-5pm. The first session will be on Tuesday July 9th.

  • The space is limited to 20 people at each session, so that everyone has the opportunity to speak and to try and make the space feel connected and comforting. Tickets can be booked here via Outsavvy: https://www.outsavvy.com/event/20663/the-breathing-room-for-professionals-online

  • There is no charge to attend The Breathing Room

  • The space is facilitated, by me, but will not have guest speakers or an agenda. We will start by agreeing how we want to share the space, I might ask a few questions but largely we will just talk about whatever comes up - this is similar to the approach taken by death cafe, which you might be familiar with.

  • The space is open to anyone working with people experiencing homelessness or related struggles, whether the work is paid or unpaid and whether what you want to talk about happened recently or in the past.

  • The session is online, so that people can join as part of their work day and from places across the country.

The Museum of Homelessness are also hosting a Breathing Room event for people with lived and living experience of homelessness. This will be held every month in-person at Manor House Lodge, Finsbury Park, London. Get in touch for more information if you know people who might like to come along.

If you'd like to have a chat about hosting a dedicated one-off or repeated Breathing Room space for your team, organisation or partnership, in-person or online, get in touch with Gill@museumofhomelessness.org to talk about rates (on a sliding scale depending on org type and size).
