New Literacy Course For Adults Who Have Experienced Homelessness

New Literacy Course For Adults Who Have Experienced Homelessness

It is estimated that half of people with experience of homelessness have inadequate literacy skills to cope with the demands of everyday life. Some may be unwilling or unable to engage in formal adult education. Barriers include long-term health problems, inadequate life skills, financial difficulties, housing problems and, commonly, fear of learning.

That is why City Lit have launched a new literacy programme for adults who have experiences homelessness. Read on for more info.
Do you work with clients who struggle with reading and writing? Are these challenges holding them back from securing housing, employment, or living independently? 

Many people facing homelessness have difficult memories of school or fear returning to a classroom setting. The pressure of formal learning can feel overwhelming, especially for those who have experienced setbacks in the past.

City Lit now offers a new literacy course designed to meet the needs of vulnerable learners. This course is:

  • Non-accredited – No exams or pressure, just supportive learning.
  • Confidence-focused – A safe, welcoming space to build skills at their own pace.
  • Personalised – Teaching adapts to each learner’s goals and abilities.
