The idea is to create a photovoice project. The concept of photovoice is around being the catalyst for change, raising awareness, reducing social injustice and giving the voiceless a voice. A great example is Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton which has now become Humans of a further 22 countries.

It is around people capturing places of significance in a photo, whether this be positive or negative experiences and to have a voice recorded narrative over the photo or simply a speech bubble, something to capture what's behind the image. The idea that a place we may just walk past has profound meaning to someone else, but also the photographer’s journey which may involve the use of services such as Changing Lives.

These days photography is so easy and accessible to those even with limited funds (smart phones), but, those with different 'life' priorities with no disposable income means, the everyday captures we take for granted, in our everyday lives is not afforded to those in our care.

Changing Lives is diversifying by the day, offering support to a wide and varied range of individuals, Homeless Veterans Service, Liberty Project, our PTS and also Northumberland Temporary Accommodation Service, from a spectrum of backgrounds and ages. It's fair to say, some may even have experience of photography and can share their skills, whilst others may have treasured memories of snapping away as a child, possibly with a friendly chastise for wasting the 'film'!

Where this type of work has been run before it has been found to be so empowering for individuals and it has led on to photography courses in the past as well as a new hobby and increased confidence. Strategically, it is for us to demonstrate to funders the therapeutic models we use, and how important our services are for the monumental outcomes but also the soft outcomes of someone being supported through their recovery and being heard. In summary, the fact is photographs tell a story, but, only if you have basic access to the tools even the simplest of cameras can so easily capture a memory to be then linked with a narrative of that time, happy or sad it is a tale worth telling and hearing!
