Joining the Dots – Reflections

Last month we sponsored Homeless Network Scotland to run ‘Joining the Dots – Connect Learn and Act on Street Homelessness in Glasgow’. Glasgow is working with the Institute of Global Homelessness (IGH) and is one of their vanguard cities working towards ending street homelessness by 2030. This event bought together local organisations that are working with people who are sleeping rough and experiencing street homelessness from across Glasgow.

Takeaways and Reflections

  • Drive towards ending street homelessness in Glasgow

As part of the IGH Place to Call Home initiative, Glasgow is aiming for a 75% reduction in city centre rough sleepers and 50% reduction across Glasgow. There was recognition that while lots has been done in how Glasgow responds to homelessness and rough sleeping, there is still more work to do. Learning can be shared across organisations and other cities. Additionally, it is important to be reminded that positive change is possible and achievable. Throughout the day, it was obvious that there was also a collective desire to keep improving and working together in partnerships.

  • Importance of Partnership working

A big part of how Glasgow is working revolves around partnerships. Numerous organisations are working towards ending street homelessness and the partnerships they form are a vital part of achieving their goals. Involving people with lived experience is a crucial part of this. Creating a space for people with lived and living experience to share their views and experiences is important when planning and delivering services. The importance of partnership working was also highlighted with the announcement of the new Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness.

  • Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness

The new Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness is a new partnership that will make decisions about the planning, design and commissioning of services. The partnership consists of Glasgow City HSCP, Aspire, Crossreach, Loretto Care, Mungo Foundation, Sacro, Salvation Army and Ypeople. Engaging and connecting with the wider homelessness sector and people with lived experience is central to the work of the Alliance. Although they are just at the start of their journey and work, the new Alliance is an exciting development. It is due to run for 10 years and many will be watching closely to see how it works out.

Homeless Network Scotland are in the process of planning follow up training events. With the current uncertainty and cancellation of events due to Coronavirus, these will be scheduled at a later date. Please check their website and our what’s on as and when this changes.

HNS have produced a full report from the day, which can be viewed here.
