'The Unity Project' workshops helps obtain access to Public Funds

The Unity Project exists to support migrants who have 'no recourse to public funds' (NRPF). We provide weekly casework sessions, assisting applicants in making the complex ‘Change of Conditions’ application for recourse to public funds.

Recently, the Frontline Network commissioned two Unity Project workshops through the Frontline Network ‘Events Fund’. The initial workshops were very successful, which led to further funding being allocated for six additional workshops via the Frontline Network ‘Ideas Fund’.

These workshops have supported individuals with ‘No Recourse to Public Funds’ in making the necessary but complex legal application to access state support. Each workshop was facilitated by caseworker and supervised by an an OISC accredited solicitor. Previous applicants, who have lived experience of ‘NRPF’, have also come back to volunteer at subsequent workshops, helping individuals navigate the application process.

‘No Recourse to Public Funds’ is a restrictive condition which can often lead to extreme poverty and homelessness. The application to remove the restriction is complex, yet there is no legal aid available. Advisors must be OISC-accredited, meaning that it is practically inaccessible to many who are eligible to apply.

Having funding for these workshops has equipped many individuals with the ability to make an application independently. ‘I feel like a lawyer’ said one individual after attending a workshop. At the workshop, the requirements of the ‘Change of Conditions’ application are explained in detail so that applicants have the necessary information to do it themselves. It is also an opportunity for them to put their excel skills to the test. This is a valuable skill for applicants, considering many who obtain limited leave to remain (LLTR) via the 10-year route to settlement will need to make multiple applications.

Not only have these workshops helped many obtain Recourse to Public Funds, they have also provided a community for individuals to share their experiences of applying for a ‘Change of Conditions’.

If you would like to arrange an event for frontline workers in your area, Frontline Network have funding to help you. As a frontline worker you can apply for up to £500 to put on an event aimed at sharing learning, developing professional networks, and overcoming barriers and challenges.

Similarly, the Frontline Network Ideas Fund can also help you access funding to turn an idea that will improve the situation for people experiencing homelessness into reality. The funding ranges from £200 to £10,000, for ideas big and small. You can use it to develop creative solutions and new ways of working.
