Changing Lives Shadowing Mayday in Oxford

Upon arrival at their office in the centre of Oxford we had a meeting with Mayday Trust's Social Impact Manager to discuss how the Inform System is used to evaluate the impact of the Personal Transitions Service (PTS) and what impact this is having amongst partnership organisations which run the service.

The Personal Transitions Service (PTS) is a voluntary, bespoke, one-to-one coaching service delivered by Asset Coaches. This is currently offered to those living in Changing Lives Accommodation throughout the North East. Asset Coaches meet regularly with the people they work with, focusing on an individual's strengths, passions, interests and skills in-order to build confidence, wellbeing, positive support networks as well as brokering opportunities for growth and development. The goal of the service is to promote independent living within the wider community and reduce re-admission to supported housing projects.

Sarah Hughes, Asset Manager for Mayday Trust in Oxford then took us on a tour of commonly used Places of Purpose for their Asset Coach Team whilst we discussed the different housing systems in both of our respective regions, as well as how the PTS operates within them.

In the afternoon we met Sarah’s team of Asset Coaches and had a development session on the practicalities of the PTS and the nature of Strength Based work.

We discussed the following topics:

  • Effective engagement
  • Working alongside other support services
  • Confidentiality and sharing information within the PTS
  • Upholding Strength Based values consistently

We also had a discussion around Developmental Assets, the list of Internal and External Assets which the Strength Based Approach states all individuals have. These could include Positive Values, Commitment to Learning or Support Networks. Our discussion was focussed on how these assets are communicated and evidenced in day to day interactions.

Both Lyndsay and I found the shadowing experience positive and constructive, it has assisted us in further establishing the PTS and Strengths Based Approach in our own services as well as helping to ensure consistency of delivery between both our organisations.
