Small Essentials Starter Pack
ORGANISATION: Target Housing
To help make a house a home for under 35’s affected by welfare benefit changes by providing a starter pack of essential items for those who are moving into new accommodation after being homeless.
Target Housing have been working with vulnerable, single homeless people for over 25 years, supporting them to move into independent, settled accommodation with local authorities, housing associations and private landlords.
Target have recently been working with Local Authority Homeless departments to look at, and better understand, issues that (mainly) under 35’s are now facing when obtaining accommodation due to changes to the welfare benefit system, in particular LHA cap on housing benefit.
Plus, through talking to people coming into homeless services we understand that most people don’t want to have second-hand bedding, crockery, cutlery etc. but, due to being on low income, can’t even afford to buy these essential small items when they move into their new accommodation, because of other essential costs they have to cover, including bonds, rent in advance and moving costs.
Second hand furniture and white goods are items that can often be sourced from local charitable organisations, however, having brand new smaller items that are very personal, can make a house a home.
Target will run an ‘essential small items starter pack’ scheme. The starter packs will include bedding, a kettle, crockery, cutlery and towels, all brand new, and be available to every under 35 who needs it. Target will pilot this in one of the areas they work in, and if successful, will offer this to other local authorities.
