The aim is to introduce residents to new types of cooking and healthy eating, and to foster new project management and catering skills in preparation for work.

    DETAILS:

Using teams of homeless hostel residents, staff, and volunteers, to temporarily transform homeless hostel spaces into a restaurant/pizzeria where everyone can sit together and enjoy a high quality shared meal and restaurant experience.

To put on courses that involve homeless residents learning about food preparation, dough making, event management, and building and operating a wood fired oven.

The aim is to introduce residents to new types of cooking and healthy eating, and to foster new project management and catering skills in preparation for work.

The restaurant will invite local neighbours and community stakeholders in as paying customers to break down local stigma around homelessness. The income earned could help sustain the work going into the future.

This work has been piloted in the hostel working together with a local community organisation called Tales by the Oven that bring catering skills and expertise. Several dough making sessions have been run at the hostel which have proved very popular.

Measured outcomes would be the number of volunteer hours, qualifications achieved, and questionnaires around confidence and work readiness. Harder outcomes would be measuring the number of people getting more involved in catering/events work.

The change in attitudes of local neighbours and community stakeholders by coming into the hostel as customers would also be examined.
