Homelessness and Health: Reducing Inequalities - Kingston-upon-Thames
Homelessness and Health: Reducing Inequalities - Kingston-upon-Thames
Homelessness and Health: Reducing Inequalities - Kingston-upon-Thames
SPEAR
9am-1pm
The Guildhall, 2 High Street, Kingston-upon-Thames, KT1 1EU
In England there has been a sharp increase of +169% in homelessness between 2009/10- 2016/17, and Richmond and Kingston boroughs are both in the top 50 ‘hot spots’ for homelessness in England.
Homelessness has a significant impact on people’s health and wellbeing: homeless people’s life expectancy is 30 years lower than the general population and they are more likely to suffer poor physical and mental health and wellbeing, as well as social isolation. There are multiple barriers homeless people face trying to access health care. These, alongside the higher level of ill health suffered by homeless people, mean that homelessness costs the NHS around £85m each year.
Homelessness charity SPEAR would like to invite you to a morning conference to highlight health inequalities and best practice for working with people who are homeless. We will look at the government's plan to end rough sleeping and the current homelessness landscape.
Confirmed speakers are:
Gill Leng, Health and Homelessness Adviser, Jointly Department of Health and Social Care and Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
Caroline Bernard, Head of Policy and Communications, Homeless Link
Amanda-Hill Dixon, Senior Researcher, The Young Foundation
Suzy Solley, Research Manager, Groundswell
Dr Caroline Shulman, clinician and researcher in Homeless and Inclusion Health
This event is aimed at health commissioners, health and social care professionals and organisations working with people who are homeless.
Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
